Welcome Ulo Nmuta Omenala Na Asusu Igbo

Our Culture

Igbo culture, from southeastern Nigeria, is a rich tapestry of community, family, ancestral reverence, and hard work, centered around villages with elder-led councils, vibrant festivals like the New Yam Festival, unique masquerades (Mmanwu), and strong artistic traditions in music, dance, and carving, all while balancing traditional beliefs (Chukwu, spirits) with modern influences like Christianity and entrepreneurial spirit, expressed through language (Igbo) and customs like kola nut ceremonies.
Core Values & Social Structure Community & Family: Deep emphasis on extended families, community bonds, and collective decision-making, with high respect for elders (Ndichie).
Individual Achievement: Strong belief in personal success, honor, and hard work, often seen in their renowned entrepreneurial spirit.
Governance: Villages are often governed by councils of elders, chiefs, and women's associations, rather than a single king, promoting inclusive leadership.
Traditions & Practices
Festivals: Celebrations like the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) honor the harvest and ancestors, featuring music, dance, and elaborate attire.
Masquerades (Mmanwu): Intricate costumes and performances that act as spiritual links, embodying deities and spirits, vital for festivals and community unity.
Art & Craft: Includes expressive music, vibrant dances, pottery (often by women), wood carving, and basketry, with stylistic variations across regions.
Marriage & Kinship: Key rituals solidify family ties, such as the bride's family presenting palm wine and kola nuts (symbolizing unity) to the groom's family.
